Nature of scheme

The CGSO describes itself as “the consumer goods and services industry’s compulsory Ombud scheme, set up in line with the Consumer Protection Act.” Participation is mandatory for suppliers in the sector under the Consumer Goods and Services Industry Code of Conduct, gazetted by the Minister of Trade and Industry in March 2015 under CPA s 82. The compulsory-participation nature was upheld in CGSO NPC v Voltex (Pty) Ltd [2021] ZAGPPHC 309 — see ../cases/CGSO-Voltex-ZAGPPHC-309-2021.md.
